Dark volcanic rock and pumice line the rim of the crater stretching the whole length of the island. Little grows naturally in this dry desolate landscape, especially in summer, except for some hardy couch grass and the odd wild flower fertilized by the mule track which winds its way along the top of the volcano, past the picturesque village of Imerovigli with its villas, hotels and open spaces. Venturing a couple of kilometres in the direction of Oia you'll find the San Antonio Santorini nestled in a gap between the rocks, enjoying a pristine and serene location on the sheer cliffs. The stillness is absorbing, as are the stunning views over the basin and shimmering blue sea, for this truly is a wonderfully peaceful location. With its stone walls and elevations blending seamlessly into the cliff, some rooms even hewn out of the rock, the white-washed surfaces provide a contrast, stark yet refreshing against the dark earthy tones of the volcanic rock. The result is a clean-cut, chic, minimal ambiance which permeates all corners of this impressive hotel. A rejuvenating spa occupies a cavern gouged out of solid rock, complete with Jacuzzi, Turkish bath or Hammam and treatment rooms, the whole of which can be reserved for your private pleasure. Rooms at the San Antonio Santorini feature distressed white furniture with drift-wood accessories such as lamp stands and mirror frames, whilst some of the suites feature luxurious private outdoor Jacuzzis.
Sitting down to enjoy a quiet drink with your partner at the cliff-side lounge bar takes on a whole new meaning here; the endless void falling away before you seems like a silent vacuum, whilst the sinking sun throws deep golden hues high into the balmy horizon. Behind you a few tables are set for dinner, a little further along the still, glass-like waters of the infinity pool glisten with the ambient lighting and darkening skies. On the cliff across the bay the twinkling lights of Imerovigli shimmer in the gathering haze. The whole scene is quite magical, set for yet another romantic evening, what could be more perfect.
