The Chromata Hotel is an exclusive boutique hotel woven onto the fabric of the caldera with captivating views of the volcanic cliffs and blue Aegean far below. The resort's haphazard arrangement with domed roofs and flat surfaces, rooms carved into the soft volcanic rock, descending rooftops doubling as terraces, balconies hanging over thousand foot voids and a stunning infinity pool spilling over into the endless blue horizon, makes for a truly spectacular boutique hotel. Paradoxically, 'chromata' means 'colours' in Greek yet these seem to be deliberately lacking. Outside the whitewashed surfaces, with their multiple blue-grey shadows, reflect the intense midday heat whilst the subtle grey surfaces of the terraces, sparse vegetation and turquoise waters of the pool compliment the harder grey-ochre stone of the rocky cliffs to create contemporary chic aesthetics.
Inside, sunlight bounces off the white surfaces illuminating the rooms. The bare, uneven yet smooth walls, plastered archways and smooth rendered surfaces lend simplicity and understatement, augmenting the Greek island minimalism. Less has always been more and the subtle use of a multicoloured throw on the pristine white bedding together with the greys of the windows and doors is enough to break the stark tonal monotony, giving the requisite depth to the room.
The languorous outdoor lifestyle of the island is all too easy to assimilate and get used to; watching the world go by hundreds of feet below is extremely satisfying and surprisingly relaxing. This is made all the more easier by having the Chromata Hotel's cocktail bar and restaurant auspiciously located within a few paces of the pool. For the more adventurous there is always the picturesque village of Imerovigli sitting high on the volcanic cliff. A maze of little alleyways lead off the meandering path which follows the volcanic cliff past the nearby village of Firostefani all the way to Fira, capital of the island, a short twenty minute walk. Quite the idyllic and sublime location.
