NEW

High up in the Mainalo Mountains in the village of Levidi, an abandoned stone mansion lay forlorn and rejected, its owners having abandoned it long ago in the forties, preferring to emigrate overseas instead. Over the years the elements had reduced its nineteenth century charm and elegance to a pile of stone and crumbling walls, left standing alone in a muddy field surveying the valley below in silence. As with many proud old buildings their demise can often be suddenly reversed, so long as the right person chances upon it; someone with vision, enthusiasm and taste and a wallet deep enough to return the building to its former glory. Enter the present owners, a couple from Athens who stumbled across the ruin in 2007.

Today the Villa Vager has been restored beyond its original charm into a uniquely engaging boutique mountain retreat, run more like a private home than a hotel by the openly hospitable owners and their small team. The solid chestnut beams, exposed stonewalls, ornate wrought iron railings and fittings, selected antique furniture and accessories work well to create a bespoke Greek period ambiance. Rooms are mainly suites, each unique with tasteful individual décor and character, most with views. As with all our hotels, we appreciate understated style, believing the adage that ‘less is more’ is timeless and chic, and the Villa Vager certainly fulfils all these criteria.

Occupying a prime location at the top of the village with endless views across the valley and the mountains beyond, the Villa Vager offers peace and tranquility in a traditional Greek village setting. You will find a number of bars, restaurants and cafés within a few minutes walk, whilst the hotel itself offers private dining if you prefer to stay in. With an abundance of activities to hand including hiking, kayaking, rafting, Polaris quad tours and winter skiing this would make an ideal weekend break.

Greece is a kaleidoscope of landscapes. Although better known for its islands and beaches its heartland is no less beautiful, made up of mountain ranges, rugged terrain and raw authentic nature. The Peloponnese is no exception with wonderful wooded mountains, lush green valleys, fast flowing rivers, spectacular beaches and empty rural roads.

Within this patchwork of landscapes you’ll find the village of Levidi, surrounded by forested slopes and mountain peaks. The air you’ll notice is pure and cool and the vistas crisp and clear. The Villa Vager sits near the top of the village on a small hill affording it even more majestic views. A clutch of tavernas, coffee shops and bars are all within walking distance, whilst some local shops showcase regional delicacies.
